If your home has older breakers, especially those made by manufacturers with a history of problems or ones that have been recalled, it may be worth having them inspected. Professional electricians can perform a thermal scan of the panel to identify hot spots, test breaker tripping times, and verify that all connections are tight.
When a breaker is suspected of being bad, it is best to consult a professional. Attempting to replace a breaker without proper training can result in severe injury or additional damage to the electrical system. Most DIY enthusiasts can safely change an outlet or a switch, but working inside a breaker panel is a different matter. There is a real risk of contacting energized bus bars, which remain live even when the main breaker is turned off unless the utility service is disconnected.
Replacement breakers should always match the panel brand and the current rating of the old unit. Installing a higher-rated breaker to stop nuisance tripping is extremely dangerous, as it can cause the wires to overheat and start a fire before the breaker ever trips.
