More than two years after launching its own device-tracking network, Google has finally followed up with its own tracker. The Pixel Tag, which goes on sale in November, looks like one of the more capable trackers too: It combines ultra wideband (UWB) with Bluetooth 6.0 Channel Sounding for two distinct types of precision tracking.
The Pixel Tag goes on sale on November 11th, unlike the newly announced Pixel 11 and Pixel Watch 5, which are already available to preorder and ship next week. When it arrives, the Tag will cost $29, with a four-pack for $99 — the exact same pricing as Apple’s AirTag 2.
The Pixel Tag is a slim oblong device available in one grayish color — Fog — that weighs about 12g, or 0.4oz. Like the AirTag, it has no built-in hooks or clips for attaching to objects you want to track. There’s a single button that will trigger a sound on your phone, for the rare occasion when you’ve got the Tag but have lost your main device. It also has an IP67 rating, so it should be safe from dust and rain. As for the battery, the Pixel Tag takes CR2032 coin batteries, and says one battery should last for over a year.
Naturally, it’ll be compatible with Google’s Find Hub network, which leverages the Bluetooth capabilities of Android devices worldwide to help locate lost objects. After a rocky launch, the network has improved steadily since, though when I tested it last year I found it was still less precise than Apple’s.
Once you’re close enough to the Pixel Tag, UWB lets the Find Hub app display the distance and direction to the tracker, so long as you’re using a phone with a UWB chip. Channel Sounding is a newer development that can display the exact distance, but not direction, and it will work with any phone or tablet that includes Bluetooth 6.0. The Moto Tag 2 is the only other tracker to currently support it.
Google device owners will need a Pixel 10 or later to take advantage of Channel Sounding, and any Pro model since the 6 for UWB — even in the new Pixel 11 series, the base model still lacks UWB. You can track the Tag using a Pixel Watch too, and any model since the 4 will support Channel Sounding, while the 2 or later include UWB. You can also ask Gemini to ring the Tag’s speaker for you.
Google’s long-awaited entry into the physical tracking space
The Pixel Tag’s announcement closes a gap that has existed in the Android ecosystem for years. Apple introduced the AirTag in April 2021, and it quickly became the default choice for iPhone users who wanted to keep tabs on keys, wallets, backpacks, and luggage. Google, meanwhile, launched its Find My Device network in 2024 with support for third-party trackers, but it did not offer its own first-party hardware until now. That left Android users with a fragmented landscape of options from companies like Chipolo, Pebblebee, and Motorola, none of which had the same level of integration that Apple’s AirTag enjoys with the iPhone.
The arrival of the Pixel Tag is therefore a significant marker in Google’s attempt to build a more cohesive Android ecosystem. It is also a direct challenge to Apple’s dominance in the item tracker market. While AirTag has been a strong seller, it has limitations: it requires an iPhone for setup and full functionality, and it has been criticized for its lack of Android compatibility. Google’s approach with the Pixel Tag is to lean into the strengths of its own network while also adopting newer Bluetooth technology that Apple has not yet implemented.
Understanding UWB and Bluetooth Channel Sounding
The two technologies at the heart of the Pixel Tag are often confused, but they serve different purposes. Ultra wideband, or UWB, is a short-range wireless protocol that measures the time it takes for radio signals to travel between two devices. Because UWB operates over a very wide frequency spectrum, it can calculate distances with remarkable accuracy, often within centimeters. This allows a phone to display both the distance and direction to a UWB-enabled tracker, making it easy to walk straight to a lost item. Apple has used UWB in its AirTags since the first generation, and Google has included UWB chips in its Pixel Pro phones since the Pixel 6 Pro.
Bluetooth Channel Sounding, on the other hand, is a more recent addition to the Bluetooth specification. It uses phase-based ranging to determine the distance between two Bluetooth 6.0 devices. Unlike UWB, it cannot tell you the direction of the object, but it can provide a highly accurate distance measurement. This makes it useful for finding an object when you know it is somewhere nearby but you are not sure whether it is on a table, under a couch, or in the next room. Channel Sounding is not limited to flagship phones; it is expected to appear across a wide range of Android devices, including mid-range and budget models, in the coming years. That means the Pixel Tag will be able to offer precise distance-based tracking to a much larger audience than UWB alone could reach.
Combining both technologies gives the Pixel Tag a flexibility that many other trackers lack. If you have a newer Pixel Pro phone, you get the full arrow-and-distance experience. If you have a phone with Bluetooth 6.0, you can still get an exact distance reading, though you will have to move around to identify the direction yourself. And if you have an older Android phone, you can still use the basic Find Hub network to see the last known location on a map.
Design and everyday usability
The Pixel Tag’s design is noticeably different from the AirTag’s. Apple’s tracker is a small circular disc, about the size of a large coin. Google’s Pixel Tag is longer and thinner, with a rounded oblong shape. This design choice may make it easier to slip into narrow pockets, wallets, luggage tags, or even the lining of a jacket. It weighs just 12 grams, so it will barely add any heft to a keychain or bag. The single physical button is located on the edge of the device, and pressing it will emit a sound from your paired phone, helping you locate a misplaced handset. This is a useful reverse-finding feature, although it is less comprehensive than the network-based locating that the Find Hub app provides.
The lack of built-in attachment points is a common trait among trackers like the AirTag, but it also means you will likely need to buy an accessory. Third-party cases and holders for AirTags are plentiful, but Pixel Tag accessories will take time to appear on the market. The IP67 water and dust resistance rating means the Tag can survive accidental drops in sinks, puddles, or brief submersions, making it suitable for outdoor use. The CR2032 battery is the same type used in many other trackers, and the one-year battery life is in line with industry norms.
Integration with the Find Hub network and Gemini
Google’s Find Hub network is the backbone of the Pixel Tag experience. It works by using the Bluetooth radios in millions of Android devices around the world. When one of those devices passes within range of your lost Tag, it can securely relay the Tag’s location to Google’s servers, allowing you to see the approximate position on a map. This is the same crowdsourced model that Apple uses for AirTags and that Tile has used for over a decade. Google’s network launched in 2024 and initially suffered from some reliability issues, but it has steadily improved with updates and increased participation from Android users.
The Pixel Tag also benefits from deep integration with Google’s app ecosystem. Find Hub is built into the Find My Device app on Android, so you do not need to install a separate app to manage your trackers. You can also ask Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, to ring the Tag for you. This hands-free approach is convenient for people who are already accustomed to using voice assistants to control their smart devices. As Gemini continues to evolve, it is likely that more advanced tracking commands will be added.
Device compatibility and limitations
One of the most important considerations for potential buyers is device compatibility. The Pixel Tag itself uses Bluetooth and UWB, but not every phone can take advantage of every feature. For the best experience, you need a Pixel 10 or later for Channel Sounding, or a Pixel Pro model since the 6 for UWB. This means that people with older Pixel phones or non-Pixel Android devices will not be able to use the precise tracking features. They can still use the standard Find Hub network to see the Tag’s location on a map, but they will not get the distance and direction indicators.
The Pixel Watch situation is similar. Google promises that any Pixel Watch model from the 2 upward supports UWB, while the 4 and newer support Channel Sounding. If you own a smartwatch from another brand, you may be out of luck, as Google has not announced support for Wear OS devices beyond its own Pixel Watch line. This is a reminder that the Pixel Tag is, first and foremost, a device designed to strengthen the Pixel ecosystem, not to act as a universal tracker for all Android users.
Competitive landscape and price
At $29 for a single Tag and $99 for a four-pack, the Pixel Tag matches the AirTag 2’s pricing exactly. That is a deliberate move by Google to position the Tag as a head-to-head competitor. It also makes the Pixel Tag significantly more affordable than many third-party trackers, which often cost between $25 and $40 but lack the same level of integration. The Moto Tag 2, which is also available on Android, is the only other tracker that supports Bluetooth Channel Sounding, but Google’s offering is likely to have broader visibility thanks to the Pixel 11 launch event.
Apple’s AirTag 2 has the advantage of a well-established user base and tight integration with the iPhone’s UWB chip. The Find My network remains exceptionally reliable, and Apple has built trust over several years. Google’s network, by comparison, is still playing catch-up. The challenge for Google is not just building a good tracker—it is convincing millions of Android users to rely on its crowdsourced tracking network when they might already be using products from Tile, Chipolo, or Motorola.
The Pixel Tag could become a compelling reason to stick with the Pixel ecosystem, especially for people who have already bought into Google’s phones, watches, and smart home devices. It promises a level of precision that was previously unavailable on Android, and it does so at a price that undercuts or matches most rivals. The real test will come after November 11th, when the Tag reaches customers and the Find Hub network has to prove that it can handle a wave of new devices. If the network performs as well in practice as it does in demonstrations, the Pixel Tag could easily become one of the most popular Android accessories of the season.
