
Prentis, a new artificial intelligence research lab specializing in computer use models, is in advanced discussions to raise $100 million at a $1 billion valuation. The startup, co-founded by serial entrepreneur Ritankar Das, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, and Zynga founder Mark Pincus, aims to transform how office workers interact with computers by developing AI agents that can autonomously navigate routine workflows across documents and systems.
Launched in April, Prentis is training models to learn the typical tasks that consume office workers' time—such as processing insurance claims, handling customs duty refund exceptions, and managing data entry across multiple platforms. The goal is to build AI agents that can control computers directly, automating these repetitive tasks without human intervention. By focusing on computer use rather than just code generation, Prentis is betting that office automation will soon surpass coding as AI's biggest commercial use case.
Funding and Valuation
The company is in talks to secure $100 million from investors, according to two people familiar with the discussions. This would value Prentis at roughly $1 billion, marking it as one of the most prominent new AI labs to emerge in 2026. The funding round comes as the AI industry sees a surge in investment for agentic AI—systems that can act independently rather than just generate text or images.
Prentis has already signed contracts worth up to $50 million with several customers, including a healthcare management service organization, a manufacturer, and goods and clothing manufacturers. Internal investor materials seen by TechCrunch project an estimated $75 million annualized run rate by the third quarter of this year. However, the pitch deck notes that these figures reflect estimated annualized value based on a contracted fee equal to 20% of savings realized, not recognized revenue, and are performance-dependent.
Technology and Competitive Edge
Prentis claims its proprietary model, Hive-32B, outperforms leading rivals on two key benchmarks. On WindowsAgentArena, which measures end-to-end task completion on real Windows applications, and ScreenSpot-v2, which tests a model's ability to locate the correct on-screen control, Hive-32B beats OpenAI's GPT-5.4 and Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.6. The company argues its advantage comes from running a much smaller, cheaper model—roughly 10 times lower cost per task than frontier APIs—making it more economical to deploy across everyday workflows. These benchmark results have not been independently verified.
The startup operates in a crowded market. Anthropic, OpenAI, and Mira Murati's Thinking Machines Lab are all working on similar AI agents for computer use. In fact, Anthropic recently acquired Vercept, a Seattle-based computer-use startup, folding in its founders and shutting down its product. This illustrates the intense competition for talent and technology in the agentic AI space.
Founders and Background
Prentis is led by Ritankar Das, who also founded Titan, a holding company that builds and operates AI companies. Das, now 31, was UC Berkeley's youngest University Medalist in more than a century, graduating at 18 with a double major in bioengineering and chemical biology before earning a master's in biomedical engineering at Oxford. He later dropped out of an AI PhD program at Cambridge, where he had been a Gates Cambridge Scholar, to found Titan in 2014. Das describes Titan as a modern version of Berkshire Hathaway—a holding company funded by its own exits rather than outside limited partners.
Other businesses launched by Titan include Tala Health, an AI-powered virtual care provider that raised a $100 million seed round last year, and Forta Health, an autism care startup that raised $55 million led by Insight Partners in 2024. Titan-founded Dascena, a disease prediction company, was acquired by CirrusDx in 2022.
Reid Hoffman, the LinkedIn co-founder and Greylock partner, is a well-known figure in AI. He was an early investor in OpenAI and co-founded Inflection AI with Mustafa Suleyman before Microsoft absorbed most of that team in 2024. Last month, Hoffman announced he was stepping down from Microsoft's board after nearly a decade to go "founder mode" on Manas AI, an AI drug-discovery startup he is also backing. For Prentis, Hoffman brings deep connections in venture capital and enterprise software.
Mark Pincus, founder of social gaming giant Zynga, now runs the investment firm Reinvent Capital with Hoffman as a senior adviser. He published a memoir, "Life at the Speed of Play," last month. His experience in scaling consumer technology platforms complements Hoffman's network and Das's operational expertise.
Team and Talent
Prentis has already hired more than 25 employees, according to its website. The team includes researchers who previously worked at OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Meta, Tencent, and Alibaba. This concentration of top-tier AI talent reflects the high stakes in the race to build general-purpose computer agents. The startup's ability to attract such talent despite its early stage is likely aided by the reputation of its co-founders and the promise of significant equity in a high-valuation company.
Market Context
The broader AI industry is increasingly focused on agents that can act in the world—not just in chat interfaces. Companies like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon are also investing heavily in agentic AI, while startups such as Adept AI and Cognition AI have raised billions. Prentis differentiates itself by targeting the office workflow niche, which encompasses a massive total addressable market. According to McKinsey, automation of office and administrative tasks could represent trillions of dollars in economic value globally.
However, skepticism remains. Many AI agents still struggle with reliability, hallucination, and integration with legacy enterprise systems. Prentis's small, cost-efficient model may help address some of these concerns by running locally or on lower-cost hardware, reducing latency and dependence on expensive cloud APIs. But the company must still prove that its agents can handle the complexity and variability of real-world business processes.
As the company moves toward closing its funding round, all eyes will be on its ability to scale from pilot projects to enterprise-wide deployments. If successful, Prentis could become a major player in the next wave of AI-driven automation, reshaping how millions of office workers spend their days.
